A society’s intellectuals, academics, and journalists are supposed to be its ultimate truth-tellers. Yet, in our context, too many have surrendered their independence for safety or status.
We see two distinct forms of intellectual betrayal:
- The State-Compliant Intellectual: Those who use academic jargon to justify civil rights violations, normalize military occupation, and paint an entire population’s legitimate aspirations as simple “terrorism.”
- The Ideological Sycophant: Those who excuse local atrocities, glorify armed violence, and refuse to criticize foreign patron states out of fear of losing their revolutionary credentials.
Both forms of intellectual cowardice betray the public. An intellectual’s primary allegiance must never be to a government, a military, or an armed faction—it must be to the truth, unvarnished and uncompromised.
